London's new mayor sends message to Trump

Newly-elected London Mayor Sadiq Khan dismisses U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's offer to make him an exception to his proposed ban on Muslims. Vanessa Johnston reports.

Sadiq Khan may be the exception to Donald Trump's proposed rule...a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States... But London's new mayor has another idea for the presumptive U.S. Republican nominee for president: (SOUNDBITE) (English) LONDON MAYOR, SADIQ KHAN, SAYING: "My message to Donald Trump is: Don't make an exception for me. Reconsider your views on Islam." Trump's proposal to temporarily ban Muslims came after deadly attacks by Islamist militants in Paris and California last year. But the real estate mogul told The New York Times he's happy about Khan's win. The Labour Party candidate defeated his Conservative rival last week by a record margin. Khan is the son of a Pakistani immigrant bus driver and a seamstress. (SOUNDBITE) (English) LONDON MAYOR, SADIQ KHAN, SAYING: "It's possible to be a Muslim and to be Western and London showed that last week." Just days into the job, Khan says he hopes to visit some American cities for inspiration... ...and that Trump will visit London to meet some British Muslims.
