ROUGH CUT (no reporter narration) STORY: A French police officer was observed calmly getting out of his car to confront protesters as they smash and set fire to the vehicle. He then parries blows from a man wielding a metal bar before checking out the state of the car before walking away. The images were recorded on the sidelines of a demonstration by police officers aimed at denouncing violence against them. Another officer in the car also left the scene, being protected from attack by an onlooker. French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said some of the perpetrators of the attack may include some who had been banned from the streets by a Paris police prefect before a judge struck down that prohibition order. The public prosecutor's office said after the incident it was opening an inquiry into attempted homicide. More than 300 police have been hurt and protesters have also complained of injuries sustained in seemingly isolated cases of police brutality. Tensions have been running high in France for weeks following deeply unpopular labour reforms proposed by President Francois Hollande's socialist government.
