Anger as fracking gets green light in UK

Officials in a picturesque part of Northern England have given the green light to the first fracking operation in the country for five years, despite widespread opposition. Sarah Charlton reports.

UPSOT - SHAME ON YOU Anger and disappointment - as a fracking operation gets the go-ahead in North Yorkshire - the first in the UK in five years. Councillors voting 7 to 4 in favour of the application to extract shale gas - leaving protesters fuming. (SOUNDBITE) (English) FRACK FREE RYEDALE, DI KEAL, SAYING: "There are elections next May and people here today will not forget this decision." Third Energy wants to start fracking at its site in Ryedale - drilling into the ground and using water and high-pressure to force gas from the rocks. (SOUNDBITE) (English) THIRD ENERGY, CEO, RASIK VALAND, SAYING: "We are focused on our business and we want to get on with it." But critics fear it will damage the environment and endanger wildlife. UPSOT - WE RESOLVE... The approval is a boost for Britian's shale gas industry - and with the UK government pledging to go all out on shale gas - it is unlikely to be the last.
