Scientists release first ever microscopic movies of the brightest laser in the world vaporizing water. The fascinating recordings will help in the development of future x-ray technology. Ben Gruber reports. STORY: This is the first movie to show the world's brightest laser blowing up water. The images were recorded at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in Menlo Park, California. The research could lead to improved functionality in future X-ray lasers. Liquid is the primary way scientists manoeuvre samples into a laser's path for analysis. These microscopic recordings provide data on the physics behind what happens in the fractions of a second after matter is subjected to ultra powerful x-ray pulses. Scientific implications aside - the movies reaffirm that blowing things up with lasers can be explosive fun.
