California's primary is shaping up to be pivotal for Democratic presidential rivals Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders. According to one poll, Clinton's once commanding lead over Sanders has narrowed to only two-percent, numbers which come as a surprise, according the political consultant Dave Jacobson. (SOUNDBITE) (English) DAVE JACOBSON, POLITICAL CONSULTANT, SAYING: "I mean this is a real nail-biter of a race. Nobody expected California to be a close, battleground contest, but this is really the last stand for Bernie Sanders, in terms of the optics, right? When it comes to the arithmetic, there's no viable pathway for him to lock up the Democratic nomination." At stake in the California primary are 548 delegates who are awarded proportional to the vote. Clinton only needs only a few dozen more delegates to assure her of the nomination. But, if she were to lose the state, Jacobson says it would be a blow. (SOUNDBITE) (English) DAVE JACOBSON, POLITICAL CONSULTANT, SAYING: "The Clintons have an enormous history with the state and I think in terms of the optics, it's just not going to look well. I think she'll go into the convention, not necessarily limping, but in a much weaker position if she doesn't finish the primary off with a strong win in California." Analysts say a win in California could give Sanders the power to get some of his policies included in the party's platform. A Sanders victory could also provide fuel to those who fear that Clinton won't be able to defeat presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump in the fall.
