The wrong man? Extradited Eritrean denies being human trafficker

The lawyer for an Eritrean man extradited to Italy from Sudan for alleged people-smuggling says authorities have detained the wrong man. Nathan Frandino reports.

The man identified earlier this week as alleged human trafficker Medhane Yehdego Mered might not be Mered after all. When they exrtradited him to Italy this week to face charges, police believed he was the infamous trafficker responsible for countless deaths of migrants at sea. But after these images were broadcast, the man's family identified him as refugee Medhanie Tesfamariam Berhe. The man now is being held at this prison in Rome, where his lawyer, Michele Calantropo, says he's denying all charges. (SOUNDBITE) (English) LAWYER FOR ERITREAN MAN, MICHELE CALANTROPO, SAYING: "He is another man that was taken by the Sudanese police and then he is here, but he doesn't understand the meaning of this arrest and he is convicted without being guilty." The intended target - Mered - had allegedly been heard on intercepted calls bragging about his ability pack boats full of people... many of whom likely died in the Mediterranean Sea trying to reach Europe. talian magistrates and the British National Crime Agency say they're investigating the claims... to see if they've arrested the wrong man.
