French pilots strike threatens flight chaos

A strike by Air France pilots in a row over pay cuts enters its second day on Sunday, threatening flight cancellations during the Euro 2016 soccer tournament. Paul Chapman reports.

The strike by Air France pilots began on Saturday. Passengers were facing cancellations although the airline said it was operating 83 per cent of its flights. The pilots are striking over pay cuts but they didn't get much sympathy from these passengers. (SOUNDBITE)(French) PIERRE, TRAVELLER, SAYING: "I think if you have a salary like theirs - 6,000 euros at the start and 18, 000 at the end, they shouldn't go on strike." (SOUNDBITE)(French) UNIDENTIFIED TRAVELLER, SAYING: "Unnecessary and excessive because it seems to me that the unions are striking for very little reason." For Sunday, predictions of how much chaos travellers would face varied wildly. The majority SNPL union said 70 per cent of pilots wouldn't show up for work, the company said only a quarter would strike. The four-day stoppage comes right after the start of the Euro 2016 soccer tournament. Air France says it'll try to minimise the disruption to flights serving cities where matches are being held. The pilots have launched their action during weeks of nationwide protests over plans to reform France's strict labour laws.
