Senate filibuster ends, GOP agrees to gun control votes

Senate Democrats end a nearly 15-hour filibuster after Republicans agree to hold votes on measures to tighten gun control. Linda So reports.

For nearly 15 hours, Senate Democrats staged a filibuster on the Senate floor, demanding action on gun control. SOUNDBITE: DEMOCRATIC SENATOR CHRIS MURPHY, CONNECTICUT, SAYING: "I've had enough of the ongoing slaughter of innocence, and I've had enough of inaction in this body." The marathon debate ended after Republicans agreed to hold votes on measures to expand background checks and prevent people on U.S. terrorism watch lists from buying guns. In the days following the Orlando massacre, emotions have run high in Congress. SOUNDBITE: DEMOCRATIC SENATOR TAMMY BALDWIN, WISCONSIN, SAYING: "Our thoughts and prayers are no longer enough." Orlando gunman Omar Mateen was allowed to legally buy guns even though he had been on the U.S. terrorism watch list. SOUNDBITE: DEMOCRATIC SENATOR COREY BOOKER, NEW JERSEY, SAYING: "When you attack one American, you attack us all." SOUNDBITE: REPUBLICAN SENATOR PAT TOOMEY, SAYING: "Let's get to work here let's get together and let's figure out how we achieve this because I think everybody ought to be in agreement in principle we don't want terrorists to be able to walk into a gun store and buy a gun." The last time Congress made any significant changes to federal gun laws was nearly 10 years ago following the Virginia Tech massacre.
