ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: CIA Director John Brennan said on Wednesday (June 19) that the shooting and bomb attack on Istanbul airport that killed at least 41 people was likely carried out by the Islamic State. In a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations think tank, Brennan, who referred to Islamic State by the acronym, ISIL, said the attacks "bear the hallmarks of ISIL's depravity". Brennan also said there was still "a ways to go" before significant progress could be claimed against Islamic State's ability to propagate its narrative and incite attacks. Because the U.S. is leading the international coalition against the Islamic State, Brennan said, it would be surprising if the group was not plotting attacks within the United States and against U.S. targets abroad. "It would be surprising to me that ISIL is not trying to hit us both in the region as well as in our homeland," Brennan said.
