The alleged drug traffickers were using crates of tropical fruits and vegetables to conceal cocaine aboard container ships bound for Europe from Colombia. Authorities say they busted 33 people in a major operation involving Italy, Colombia, and the U.S, seizing 11 tons of cocaine before the ships departed. Jim Allen, the DEA director for Europe and Africa, made the announcement with his Italian counterparts in Rome. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. DRUG ENFORCEMENT AGENCY DIRECTOR FOR EUROPE AND AFRICA, JIM ALLEN, SAYING: "This is the way we have to fight this war on drug trafficking. I'd like to point out that these folks that were arrested today, and have been arrested in the last couple of days, are drug traffickers, but they are violent drug traffickers. They're killers. So these officers that go out every day to risk their lives, to protect society, need to be applauded more every day by the citizens of all of our countries." Police say the cocaine was refined in the remote jungles of Colombia, before it was shipped out of the country via Panama, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.
