Tesla is in hot seat with a new probe, after a Model S on autopilot crashed on a highway in May, killing the driver. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it is investigating 25,000 sedans that are equipped with the autopilot system. Michelle Krebs, senior analyst at Autotrader: (SOUNDBITE) MICHELLE KREBS, SENIOR ANALYST, AUTOTRADER, (ENGLISH) SAYING: "The initial reaction was a knee jerk reaction, the stock went down. I think much of what will happen going forward depends on how Tesla behaves, how it handles this situation, what it does with the other vehicles that have autopilot, and how thorough the investigation is, and what changes they make. For example, with recalls, quite often we find they are terrible thing to have happened, but the way they are handled can make a huge difference." Krebs also points out that the autopilot technology is in its infancy, especially when it comes to high traffic situations, but automated driving is the future. However, the fatal crash has added to the uncertainty over whether it could stall wider deployment of such systems in the future.
