Leadsom quits race for British PM, leaving May unopposed

Energy minister Andrea Leadsom abruptly withdraws from the race for British prime minister, leaving her rival Theresa May as the only candidate. Jillian Kitchener reports.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) ANDREA LEADSOM, FORMER CONSERVATIVE PARTY LEADER CANDIDATE, SAYING: "Strong leadership is needed urgently to begin the work of withdrawing from the European Union..." Energy minister Andrea Leadsom announces THAT strong leadership will NOT come from her. ...leaving her rival Theresa May as the only candidate to succeed David Cameron as the U.K's next prime minister. (SOUNDBITE) (English) ANDREA LEADSOM, FORMER CONSERVATIVE PARTY LEADER CANDIDATE, SAYING: "I wish Theresa May the very greatest success." A well supported prime minister, said Leadsom, is needed at such a critical time. Fifty-nine year-old May has served as interior minister for the past six years. She's now set to become Britain's second FEMALE prime minister, although it was not clear how soon that would happen. Graham Brady, head of the Conservative faction in parliament, says there are still constitutional procedures to be observed... but says he aims to make a confirmation announcement as soon as possible.
