ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Iowa Senator Joni Ernst told the Republican National Convention (RNC) on Monday (July 18) that Donald Trump will restore America's role as a "strong, stabilizing force" in the world. The former officer in the Iowa National Guard spoke at the end of the opening day of the convention, which was focused around Trump's campaign theme of "Make America Safe Again". "Our country cannot take another four years like the eight we've just had," Ernst said. "It's time to stand up and fight for the security of our children, our grandchildren, and ourselves." Throughout the evening speakers including former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Defense Intelligence Agency Director Michael Flynn hammered away at national security issues, portraying Hillary Clinton as dishonest and unfit to be commander-in-chief. The gathering opened on Monday in the shadow of recent racially tinged killings of police officers and black men. Trump has sought to position himself as the law-and-order candidate in an echo of Richard Nixon's successful presidential campaign of 1968.
