Singapore's Michelin star hawker food

Singaporeans and tourists line up for the world's very first hawker stalls to be awarded a Michelin star. Sophia Soo reports.

Long lines snake around the two Singapore hawker stalls which have just made dining history. They've each been awarded a Michelin star. Curious customers are keen to see for themselves how the traditional street food they serve rates alongside the fare from top restaurants. (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) CUSTOMER, ROY SEETO, SAYING: "I think he deserved the award. Really deserved it. Because the noodles is really too good." This is the very first time a Michelin star has been awarded for street food. Chan Hong Meng who runs one of the stalls says he's delighted, especially if it helps to bring new blood into the hawker trade. (SOUNDBITE) (Mandarin) OWNER AND CHEF OF HONG KONG SOYA SAUCE CHICKEN RICE AND NOODLE, CHAN HONG MENG, SAYING: "I am very excited. Never knew hawker food can go global. So I am very very happy. Hopefully the next generation will also pick this up." Singapore is the first Southeast Asian country to be rated by the Michelin Guide.
