Lin Fu-Chun's factory in southern Taiwan is thriving. His workforce is turning out ready-made moulded concrete temples which can be delivered to clients in weeks rather than the months it takes with traditional bricks and mortar. The plant in Pingtung county makes up to 20 temples at a time complete with the desired deities also cast in concrete. The factory employs about 100 people, many of whom are local farmers coming in part time. Lin, who's worked in temple construction for nearly half a century, launched his businesses in 1993. One of these temples can cost anything from $1250 to more than $62,000. For that the structure's not just ready-made but delivered to the customer's doorstep and installed on site. (SOUNDBITE)(Taiwanese) LIN FU-CHUN, CHAIRMAN OF CHUANSO CO. LTD, SAYING: "No matter what kind of god, there are always people worshipping it, especially the God of Earth who has the most followers. People want to buy a temple so they can worship their gods conveniently. In our religion, worshipping gods is a way of relief. The gods pray for us to earn money. For people like us who've built a factory, we also must worship the god of Earth, and pray for us to earn more money." It could be those prayers are being answered. He says his temples are now being exported to Taiwanese nationals abroad keen to bring some of their native culture to their new homes elsewhere in Asia.
