A show of force. With the threat level in London at "severe"... Authorities say the heightened level is not in response to any specific intelligence, but is a long-term response to a spate of deadly attacks in Europe. While the majority of London police officers do not carry firearms -- this time it's different -- they are displaying weapons in a bid to reassure the public and deter any would-be attackers. An unidentified officer says they want to be prepared. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED ARMED OFFICER, SAYING: "In a grid-lock city, the traffic in London is bad in any circumstance, in particular in an incident of an attack we could expect chaos on the streets. What this gives us is a tried and tested and genuine method and fast response to anywhere across central London and further in the case of an incident, so we could effectively launch a team to counter any attack that we had." In July 2005 London was hit by co-ordinated suicide bombings that killed 52 people. Now an additional 600 armed officers are being visibly deployed across the British capital -- hoping the show of force will serve as a deterrent.
