Chinese tourist makes wrong turn to refugee camp

A Chinese tourist has resumed his tour of Europe after being mistakenly identified as an asylum seeker and taken to a refugee shelter where he spent two weeks. Nathan Frandino reports.

It was here inside a refugee shelter in Duelmen, Germany, where Red Cross employee Christoph Schluetermann noticed something strange about a newcomer. (SOUNDBITE) (German) RED CROSS EMPLOYEE, CHRISTOPH SCHLUETERMANN, SAYING: "He was asking for an urgent interview which sounded very dramatic. He was very agitated and seemed confused and disoriented." But he wasn't just any newcomer. He was a Chinese tourist... mistaken for a refugee. Officials say he was trying to report a stolen wallet when he accidentally registered as an asylum seeker. He was then taken here where it took 12 days to learn his true identity. (SOUNDBITE) (German) RED CROSS EMPLOYEE, CHRISTOPH SCHLUETERMANN, SAYING: "We used a translation app and he clearly communicated that he wanted his passport back, that he had a tourist visa and that his plan was to leave the country and go walking in France and Italy." The man has since been released, to continue his tour of Europe.
