ROUGH CUT (NATURAL) - NO REPORTER NARRATION STORY: Air reinforcements were called on Thursday (September 8) to combat fires in the districts of Faro, Bragança, Vila Real and Guarda, which are of most concern to authorities, Portuguese network SIC reported on it's website. In Lagoaça, in the district of Bragança, northeastern Portugal, 6 aircraft including helicopters were battling the blaze which began on Tuesday (September 6) and had spread to neighboring Mogadouro. The Portuguese National Civil Protection Authority (ANPC) told SIC, there were 233 crews on the the ground and 84 vehicles working in the fires in Lagoaça and Fornos. Deadly wildfires raging for two weeks in Portugal in August destroyed a wooded area the size of 100,000 soccer fields. The small Iberian nation alone accounts for half of all forests burned in the European Union this year.
