South Korean media say the North is suspected of conducting its fifth nuclear test after an earthquake was recorded near a known nuclear site. It is the latest defiance of U.N. sanctions by the isolated state. U.S., European and Chinese agencies recorded the tremor. South Korea has called an emergency national security meeting. Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said that, if confirmed, the action is "absolutely inadmissible". Following the country's fourth nuclear test in January, it has conducted a series of missile tests. Speculation that another nuclear test was likely has been mounting. Two months ago, a U.S.-based monitoring project recorded a high level of activity at the nuclear test site in satellite images. The country has been under U.N. Security Council sanctions since 2006, when it tested its first atomic device.
