"Snowden" director, cast attend Munich film premiere

Hollywood stars attend the European premiere of the film ''Snowden'' in Munich, Germany where much of the controversial movie was filmed. Julie Noce reports.

Director Oliver Stone and the cast of his new film "Snowden" hit the red carpet in Munich, Germany on Monday for the film's European premiere. The movie chronicles the events that led National Security Agency contractor turned whistleblower Edward Snowden to expose the U.S. government's massive surveillance programs. Stone - known for tackling controversial topics- said the film is timely and significant. (SOUNDBITE) (English) DIRECTOR OLIVER STONE, SAYING: "It's an important story and it has a lot to do with the future, and now. And we are talking about a surveillance state, with great power. We are also talking about cyber warfare. It's very serious business. But we tried to make it as exciting as possible." Snowden fled the U.S. in 2013 after leaking details about secret U.S. surveillance activities to the media. The U.S. government filed espionage charges against but he is living in Russia where he was granted asylum. For Joseph Gordon-Levitt who plays Snowden, he said it's a controversial topic but could only be told in a country where where citizens are afforded such liberties. (SOUNDBITE) (English) ACTOR JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT (PLAYING SNOWDEN), SAYING: "...And I know it's controversial to say it because especially in the United States people do feel positively about him but a lot of people also feel negatively about him. .. And in a democracy it is patriotic to ask those questions and say: Hey, is the government doing the right thing? And this is a privilege that we have the right to ask those questions. And I'm grateful for it The film also stars Shailene Woodley as Snowden's girlfriend Lindsay Mills and was shot mostly in Europe.
