ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton squared off over the so-called 'birther' controversy during the presidential debate at Hofstra University on Monday. Clinton said during the debate that Trump's "racist birther lie" cannot be easily dismissed. Donald Trump on Sept. 16 abandoned his false claim that Barack Obama was not born in the United States after spending five years peddling conspiracy theories that the country's first African-American president started life as a foreigner. He then accused Hillary Clinton, his Democratic rival in the Nov. 8 election, of starting the so-called birther movement in her failed 2008 presidential campaign against Obama, a claim that does not stand up to scrutiny. The gap between the two candidates in recent national opinion polls has narrowed in the past week, with the latest Reuters/Ipsos polling showing Clinton ahead by 4 percentage points, with 41 percent of likely voters.
