The ferocious air strikes on rebel-held parts of Aleppo abated overnight … but only to make way for Tuesday's massive ground offensive on several fronts in the besieged city. Intense clashes have been reported, with Syrian army troops advancing from the countryside to suburbs, north and south. It's the biggest ground assault yet on Aleppo after the collapse of the latest ceasefire. It includes allied militia from Iran, Iraq and Lebanon. Together, they're trying to attack Aleppo's Old City near it historic citadel, (file of old city) as well as several of the city's major access points. The ground assault only adds to the misery of residents in Aleppo's opposition-held sectors, where hundreds have been reported killed in the recent air attacks. Like one little boy, said to have died after an air strike. His father -- inconsolable. Sources on both sides of the conflict say the army is mobilizing heavy machinery at Aleppo's outskirts. But it's unclear if an all-out assault on rebel areas will happen soon.
