Israel mourns Peres

Thousands of Israelis are honoring former president and prime minister Shimon Peres ahead of his funeral on Friday. Nathan Frandino reports.

They came from far and wide to mourn Shimon Peres, Israel's elder statesman. Peres died on Wednesday at age 93 His body now rests in a flag-draped coffin in Jerusalem. (SOUNDBITE) (English) NATE NANUS, VISITOR FROM THE UNITED STATES WHO CAME TO PAY HIS RESPECTS, SAYING: "It's a great honour that he he's helped build this country, unbelievable legacy. And I'm just sorry that he had to pass." The former president and prime minister won worldwide praise for his efforts in peace talks with the Palestinians. Mourners say those efforts will not be in vain. (SOUNDBITE) (English) MICHAEL LEON, WHO CAME TO PAY HIS RESPECTS, SAYING: "We supported his vision. He was a man with a great dream to bring peace to this region, the new Middle East. Sadly, we have not reached that goal yet but we still carry on with his aims." Former U.S. President Bill Clinton also paid his respects. He shared the stage with Peres in 1993 at the signing of the Oslo Accords. He'll be joined by President Barack Obama at Friday's funeral...a high profile event demanding a high profile security presence. Police spokesperson Micky Rosenfeld. (SOUNDBITE) (English) ISRAELI POLICE SPOKESPERSON MICKY ROSENFELD SAYING: "This is one of the largest police operations that are taking place in Jerusalem for the last years, with our police officers looking at close range of everything that is going on in terms of the police movements, activities and police units." And amid the security... the final scene for one of Israel's most revered leaders.
