India to ratify Paris climate accord

India, the world's third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, is set to formally joins the Paris agreement on climate change. Paul Chapman reports.

The move's expected to speed up enactment of the landmark deal forged last December. India's ratification follows that of China and the U.S., the world's two top greenhouse gas producers. India's environment minister says it'll take time. (SOUNDBITE)(English) INDIA'S ENVIRONMENT MINISTER ANIL MADHAVE DAVE SAYING: "We will open the cards and we will make sure that development of India and the process must not be compromised." The Paris accord marks a radical shift of the world economy away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy. But it can't come into effect until at least 55 per cent of the world's greenhouse gas emitters ratify it.
