Heavy fighting on Friday on the western edge of Aleppo. Syrian government forces and their allies are trying to push back on a rebel offensive now in its second day. The offensive aims to break a weeks-long government siege on rebel-held eastern Aleppo. At least 15 civilians were reported killed in the rebel shelling and some 100 others wounded on just the first day of the assault. The government had reported it thwarted a large attack on the south and west of the city... But by Saturday, the rebels and a UK based monitoring group said insurgents had taken control of an entire suburb in the southwest corner of the city. The leader of one rebel group says ' If God is willing, we're coming Aleppo." Russian war planes have been supporting the Syrian government in the country's protracted civil war. Now, the rebel offensive has prompted Russia's Defense Minister to seek permission from President Vladimir Putin to resume airstrikes on eastern Aleppo. Putin has said that won't be necessary - for now.
