A suspected car bomb explodes at a police checkpoint and tears through a busy market in Mogadishu, killing at least ten people, as Somalia continues its weeks-long parliamentary elections. Angela Moore reports.

A suspected car bomb killed at least 10 people after exploding at a police checkpoint next to a busy market in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. The bomb blast shred the metal from the nearby shops and stalls into pieces. Emergency workers carried away the bodies of the dead and rushed to help the injured. Somali Islamist group al Shabaab, which wants to topple the Western-backed government, often carries out attacks like this in the capital. But there was no immediate claim responsibility for this latest bombing. The violence comes as Somalis go to the polls over several weeks to choose a new parliament that will ultimately select the next president. In an election that aims to try to end more than 20 years of fighting and lawlessness in the country.
