An outpouring of support for the Tacoma police officer killed while responding to a domestic violence call. Authorities say the suspect was shot and killed by police after an 11-hour standoff. Fellow police officers, firefighters, and people in the community gathered to pay their respects as a procession carried the officer's body from the hospital to the medical examiner's office. SOUNDBITE: CHIEF DONALD RAMSDELL, TACOMA POLICE DEPARTMENT, SAYING: "The officer is a 45-year-old male and joined the police department in 1999." Authorities say the veteran officer was shot multiple times by the suspect inside a home on the city's east side. SOUNDBITE: AARON RICHARD, NEIGHBOR, SAYING: "I heard two giant bangs, first I thought it was a grenade." The suspect then barricaded himself inside the home, using two children as human shields. After a lengthy standoff, the suspect was shot and killed by police, and the children rescued. DEPUTY ED TROYER, PIERCE COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT, SAYING: "The children are OK. I mean they're alive. It's going to take some work but they're alive and no other officers got hurt or killed so as far as a really bad situation the conclusion is the best we can hope for." Police say multiple weapons were found inside the house. It's unclear what led up to the shooting.
