ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: First Lady Michelle Obama took part in a Toys for Tots sorting event in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday (December 7). It is the eighth time the first lady has participated in the sorting event at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in the U.S. capital -- where she and helpers sort donated toys into various boxes to deliver to families in need. "If someone, anyone in this country, our neighbor, our classmates, our friends, people we don't even know if they hit on hard times kids it's up to us to be there for them. Right? To help them to reach out. Because the truth is that no matter what anybody says we are all in this country together. And I don't want you to let anybody else make you think anything different. You all all belong here. That is true. And that is true not during the holidays but every single day of the year," Michelle Obama said. She also told the children of military families who -- because of travel -- attend 10 to 12 schools over the course of their education, and that they were symbolic of the best of the United States. "You and your friends are from every possible background. I want you to remember that for every race, every religion and many of your families come here from all over the world. That's what our military represents. It represents the true spirit of diversity in this country." Michelle also acknowledged the 70th anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor which led the U.S. into World War Two. "On what is the 70th anniversary of Pearl Harbor when we acknowledge the sacrifice of so many I want to say a very special thank you to our service members who are here today." The annual Toys for Tots campaign is run by the U.S. Marine Corps and has sent more than 512 million toys to 237 million children to all 50 U.S. States, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to the first lady.
