ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said on Friday (February 17) there was no question that Europe must spend more on defence, but said the debate on military spending needed to include work on sustainable development. The foreign minister was speaking at a news conference on the day of the G20 meeting in Bonn. "There is no question that Europe will have to take more responsibility for that [military spending], but we cannot reduce security and peace policies to just the extent of military spending. That will not allow us to fight climate change, drought or poverty, crises which lead to violence and disruption. It needs more than increasing the defence spending to achieve security and stability, even though I must say that sometimes military interventions are needed to stop violence and create conditions where economic and social development becomes possible again," Gabriel told a reporters at the end of a G20 foreign ministers meeting. On the agenda of the ministers representing the world's major economies were conflict prevention and peace building measures, according to the official programme.
