Thousands of immigrants skip work, protest against Trump

Restaurants and other U.S. businesses shut their doors to stand in solidarity with employees taking part in 'A Day Without Immigrants,' protesting President Donald Trump's immigration policies. Jillian Kitchener reports.

The streets bustling in Washington, DC, Thursday… but many restaurants were not. Dozens of lunch and dinner spots like this one.. closing their doors ...as thousands of immigrants across the country stayed home from work and skipped classes for what was dubbed "A Day Without Immigrants." …An effort to highlight the role they play in American society and to stand up to President Donald Trump's anti-immigration rhetoric. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CALL CENTER EMPLOYEE FOR CAPITOL ONE BANK AND IMMIGRANT FROM EL SALVADOR, IRMA ANDINO, SAYING: "So I think it's important to show support and to try to open their eyes that we're not here to be criminals. Everybody is the same. We are all loved in God's eyes." (SOUNDBITE) (English) WORKER JUSTICE ORGANIZER -- MANY LANGUAGES ONE VOICE, HANNAH KANE, SAYING: "I think that they are not only important to the productivity of this country, but important to the heart and soul of this country, and important to me and I will fight with them." Business owners including Celebrity Chef Jose Andres, who is locked in a legal battle with Trump, standing in solidarity... (SOUNDBITE) (English) CELEBRITY CHEF JOSE ANDRES SAYING: "They feel under attack, they feel they are being put aside, they want to be part of the American Dream." Dozens of restaurants in other major U.S. cities were CLOSED. Others staying open with less staff… (SOUNDBITE) (English) CHEF JEFF BLACK, RESTAURANT OWNER: "We are going to stand by all of them - period." Their messages out in the open... Asking for the respect of the president, in the country they call home.
