ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Dancers performed a traditional cleansing of Rio de Janeiro's purpose-built sambadrome on Sunday (February 19) night, preparing the hallowed runway for what has been dubbed 'the greatest show on earth', the annual carnival parades. Older women in wide white dresses, known as 'Baianas' paraded through the 'Avenida', symbolically cleaning and blessing the stadium with herbs in an act stemming from the Afro-Brazilian religions Umbanda and Candomble. As they did so, the stadium buzzed in anticipation for the technical rehearsal of one of the most traditional of the 12 competing schools in Rio's top league, defending champions, Mangueira. Mangueira, whose carnival parade is entitled "Only with the help of the saints" and will portray all sorts of traditional religious practices and superstitions, will head to the sambadrome for the real deal on Monday night, February 27, competing at 3:25 a.m. the following morning (0825 GMT).
