Tornado ravages Birmingham, Alabama

They're cleaning up and assessing the damage around Fairfield, near Birmingham, Alabama, after a tornado tore across the region Thursday afternoon. With wind speeds of up to 135 mph, authorities say four people were injured, trees and power lines came crashing down and several businesses were damaged. Vonzetta Salter says she feels lucky... after a piece of wood came a little too close for comfort. (SOUNDBITE) TORNADO VICTIM, VONZETTA SALTER, SAYING: "First thing I saw was an awning from express oil change go over my car and I took cover inside of my car and just covered my head and started praying." The twister was likely spawned by Tropical storm Cindy as it moved across the deep south, downgraded but still packing a punch. Fairfield Mayor Ed May says it was the last thing his region needed. (SOUNDBITE) FAIRFIELD MAYOR ED MAY, SAYING: "Unfortunately we were dealing with so many other issues, without on the power and water works and so many other things that had to be done to make sure the city could continue to operate. And it's all just hit us at a bad time." Alabama Power says there were about 17,000 outages. Authorities say they're working as hard as they can to restore power and clean up the mess.
