A tree topples onto worshippers at a Christian festival in Portugal. Amateur video capturing people running for their lives. At least 12 people were killed in the accident on Tuesday (August 15), injuring 50. Crowds of people had gathered on Madeira to celebrate the island's patron saint, Our Lady of the Mount. It's part of the Roman Catholic festival of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which is observed across Portugal. The worshippers had gathered at a shrine in the hills above the Madeiran capital of Funchal and were preparing for a procession. The tree was rotten and partly supported by a metal cable, local media reported. It has been a tough year for Portugal, with forest fires raging and killing 64 people in June alone.
