(shot of Gleason in handcuffs) 23-year-old Kenneth Gleason was arrested Tuesday. He's facing murder charges after the fatal shootings of two black men in Baton Rouge, Louisiana last week… Police believe the shootings were racially motivated. (SOUNDBITE) Chief Jonathan Dunnam, Baton Rouge Police Dept. "Had there not been a swift conclusion to this case, I feel confident that this killer would've killed again. He could've created a tear in the fabric that holds this community together." Gleason is accused of killing a homeless man, 59-year-old Bruce Cofield, last Tuesday night .. And then two days later, of shooting to death 49-year-old Donald Smart, who was walking to his dishwasher job at a café popular with students at Louisiana State University… (SOUNDBITE) Tiquincia Smart, Sister of Donald Smart: "It's mind-boggling for somebody to take a person's life like that. He was a good man." Police say in both cases, Gleason fired from his car, then got out, walked up to the victims and shot them multiple times as they lay on the ground… (SOUNDBITE) Nisha Franklin, Daughter of Donald Smart: "It's just sad, it's senseless, number one. People just kill, just to kill these days." (SOUNDBITE) Jimmy Wetherford, Owner of Louis Cafe: "It really leaves you with a hollow feeling." Authorities say shell casings from the scene linked the two shootings and a car belonging to Gleason, who did not know the victims, fit the description of the vehicle used in the slaying. (SOUNDBITE) Hillar C Moore III, District Attorney: This is a potential death penalty case. If you look at the allegations it appears to be cold, calculated, planned, by people who were unarmed and defenseless. Authorities say they found a copy of an Adolf Hitler speech in Gleason's home over the weekend… Gleason is also being charged for firing into his neighbor's home. The homeowners, who were not killed, are black.
