KABUL - Twelve militants and an intelligence officer were killed during an Afghan police sweep operation in the Mosaee district some 30 km (18) miles southwest of Kabul Monday, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

* HELMAND - A British soldier was killed Tuesday north east of Gereshk by an explosion while patrolling on foot.

- Two civilians were killed and seven others, including five children, were wounded when a rocket hit a residential area in the Lashkar Gah district some 555 km (345) miles southwest of Kabul Monday, a provincial official said. It was not immediately clear who had fired the rocket.

PAKTIKA - A roadside bomb killed five Afghan police as they conducted an operation against militants Monday in Paktika some 150 km (95 miles) south of Kabul, the interior ministry said.

MAIDAN WARDAK - Afghan security forces rescued Sunday five employees of a security firm who were kidnapped by insurgents last month in Maidan Wardak province on the southwestern outskirts of Kabul, a provincial official said.
