Soccer-Roundup-Steau signing Elton grows in stature

LONDON, March 7 (Reuters) - Soccer news in brief from around the world:

* Brazilian Elton Jose Xavier Gomes appears to have grown in stature since arriving in Romania to sign a four-year contract with Steaua Bucharest.

His former club Corinthians had recorded Elton’s height as 1.56 metres (5 ft 1ins) on their Web site but during his medical in Bucharest he was measured at 1.58 (5ft 2ins).

Steaua want Elton to deputise for long-term injury victim playmaker Nicolae Dica, but local media have criticised the signing of the Brazilian.

“Don’t worry,” former international Gheorghe Popescu told reporters. “If a small Elton plays as a genuine Brazilian player, you’ll consider him as being 1.80 metres tall.”

* Politehnica Timisoara’s coach Alin Artimon has quit the Romanian first division club.

“There was no indication of Artimon’s surprise decision, but club president Marian Iancu accepted the coach’s resignation,” spokesman Levente Molnar said.

Former international Iosif Rotariu will take temporary charge. Politehnica Timisoara are sixth in the table and held leaders Dinamo Bucharest to a 1-1 draw last weekend.

* Getafe have reached an agreement with Rubin Kazan to sell 29-year-old Serbian striker Veljko Paunovic, the Primera Liga club said on their Web site

* The coach of Bulgarian second division club Spartak Pleven Anatoli Kirilov has been given a five-match touchline ban and fined 1,000 levs ($670) for violent conduct during a league match last Saturday.
