STOCKHOLM, July 22 (Reters) - Sweden’s Olympic triple jump champion Christian Olsson said on Tuesday he will miss next month’s Beijing Games after reinjuring his thigh during a Grand Prix meeting on home soil.
“The Olympics is gone, the season is gone,” Olsson was quoted as saying on the daily Expressen’s Web site after injuring his thigh muscle again during a jump.
“I was nervous ahead of this, I felt it was risky all the time. From experience I know it’s probably a tiny strain but it’s in the same spot as before. It’s the same injury as last year,” he said.
The 28-year-old, who also won the 2003 world title, was making a comeback at the event after a long injury layoff forced him to miss the indoor season and the 2007 world championships in Osaka, having undergone thigh surgery.
“I’m still not as disappointed as I thought I would be,” he added after finishing third with a jump of 17 metres. “There have been so many setbacks.”
“Of course, this is a big step towards my career being over. I’ll try to come back but I’ve got to consider if it’s worth it.”
Since winning gold at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Olsson has been plagued with injuries. He also missed the Helsinki world championships in 2005.
