TABLE-Japan non-mini auto sales down 1.9 pct in August

TOKYO, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Automobile sales in Japan, excluding 660cc minivehicles, fell 1.9 percent in August from a year earlier to 227,737 vehicles, the Japan Automobile Dealers Association said on Monday.
That marked the 26th straight month of year-on-year declines in sales of non-mini vehicles in Japan, as demand falters due to a shrinking population and diminishing interest in owning cars among young people.
“We had been hoping for a rebound in reaction to weak sales in July, but unfortunately that didn’t pan out,” an official at the association said. Sales in July plunged 9.7 percent after all Japanese automakers temporarily halted production due to a supply bottleneck at a key parts maker that was hit by an earthquake.
Sales at top-ranked Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) rose 2.5 percent, ending an 11-month fall in demand. Nissan Motor Co (7201.T) broke a nearly two-year slide with a 2.2 percent rise in August. But Honda Motor Co (7267.T) retreated 9.5 percent for the fourth straight month of decline.
For the January-to-August period, sales totalled 2,303,252 units, down 9.6 percent from a year earlier.
