Judge signs $42 mln deal over Peabody environmental liabilities

Coal producer Peabody Energy Corp will pay $20 million as part of a $43 million settlement with the U.S. government, five states and seven tribes over environmental claims in its bankruptcy, according to a court order signed on Tuesday.

Judge Barry Schermer approved a deal that was struck earlier this year over claims related to a gold and metals mining subsidiary of Peabody. The preliminary agreement cleared the way for Schermer to approve a plan for the world’s largest private-sector coal producer to exit bankruptcy.
