US court backs Best Buy, others in gift card suit

WASHINGTON, June 23 (Reuters) - A court that specializes in patent appeals ruled for Best Buy and a range of other companies on Monday involved in a legal fight over gift cards.

Realsource had accused Best Buy (BBY.N), Circuit City (CC.N), Starbucks (SBUX.O), Williams-Sonoma (WSM.N) and its Pottery Barn unit, Costco (COST.O), Lowe’s (LOW.N) and Seattle’s Best Coffee of infringing on a patent for its method of putting value on gift cards.

The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas had granted a summary judgment of non-infringement. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which handles all patent appeals, agreed. (Reporting by Diane Bartz; Editing by Tim Dobbyn)
