May 27 (Reuters) - Bio-Reference Laboratories Inc BRLI.O reported higher quarterly results that trumped Wall Street expectations, helped by growth in its esoteric testing business and an increase in patients served.
Net income rose to $5.8 million, or 21 cents a share, for the second quarter ended April 30, from $4.6 million, or 17 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue rose 27 percent to $110.4 million.
Analysts on average expected the company to earn 19 cents per share, excluding items, on revenue of $102.3 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Esoteric testing business was 56 percent of revenue for the second quarter, up from 52 percent a year ago, it said.
The laboratory testing services company said the number of patients served rose 22 percent to 1,370 from a year ago. Shares of the company were trading up 44 cents at $22.74 in morning trade on Nasdaq. They touched a high of $23.04 in early trade.
