Oct 28 (Reuters) - Business software maker BMC Software Inc BMC.O posted quarterly results above Wall Street expectations, helped by strong bookings, and raised its profit outlook for 2010.
BMC, which provides software to automate data center operations, raised its 2011 earnings-forecast range by 8 cents a share to $2.92-$3.02 a share.
Second-quarter net income surged 40 percent to $131.8 million, or 73 cents a share. This included an $18 million tax benefit. Excluding items, the company posted earnings of 82 cents a share.
Revenue rose 9 percent to $502 million.
Analysts were expecting earnings of 70 cents a share, excluding items, on revenue of $483.3 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Bookings grew 5 percent, boosted by a 23 percent increase in license bookings.
Last week, BMC’s bigger rival CA Inc CA.O posted a quarterly profit that exceeded expectations on growth in bookings.
The Houston, Texas-based company’s shares were up 3 percent at $45.15 in extended trade. The stock has risen 16 percent since the company reported first-quarter results late July. (Reporting by Sayantani Ghosh in Bangalore; Editing by Vinu Pilakkott)
