QUITO, Oct 15 (Reuters) - Ecuador’s unemployment rose to 9.1 percent in the third quarter of 2009 compared with 7.1 percent registered during the same period a year ago as the economy slowed, the government said on Thursday.
Unemployment also rose from the 8.3 percent registered in Ecuador in the second quarter of the year, according to the INEC statistics agency.
OPEC-member Ecuador’s economy contracted 1.06 percent in the second quarter of this year compared with growth of 8.28 percent in the same period a year earlier. A sharp fall in oil prices hit Ecuador hard as the world economy struggled with the global financial crisis. (Reporting by Javier Mozzo in Quito; Editing by Theodore d’Afflisio)
