Brazil retail sales fall 1% in January - IBGE

BRASILIA, March 24 (Reuters) - Retail sales volumes in Brazil excluding cars and building materials fell 1.0% in January from December, statistics agency IBGE said on Tuesday, a steeper fall than the median estimate in a Reuters poll of economists of a 0.6% decline.

Sales grew 1.3% from the year-earlier period, less than the expected 2.5% increase in the Reuters poll, the government agency said. (Reporting by Jamie McGeever; Editing by Andrew Heavens)
