Aldi, Lidl take record share of UK grocery - Kantar

   * Aldi, Lidl sales jump 15 pct in 12 weeks to April 17
 * Total grocery sales up 3.6 pct, inflation up 4.3 pct
 * Morrisons only one of top four chains to gain share

LONDON, April 27 (Reuters) - Sales growth at discount grocers Aldi and Lidl has accelerated as Britons look to make savings amid rising prices and government spending cuts, data from market researcher Kantar Worldpanel showed on Wednesday.
Total grocery sales rose 3.6 percent year-on-year in the 12 weeks to April 17, improving on a 2.6 percent increase in the 12 weeks to March 20, helped by a pick up in demand ahead of Easter.
However, sales growth was outstripped by a 4.3 percent rise in price inflation, Kantar said, suggesting consumer demand remains subdued.
Sales growth at privately-owned German discounters Aldi and Lidl surged 15 percent and 14.7 percent respectively, taking their market shares to record highs of 3.3 percent and 2.6 percent.
Kantar said their strong showing was not a re-run of 2008 when new shoppers turned to these outlets. Instead, their growth was being driven by a sharp increase in spending from existing shoppers, it said.
Kantar also noted that not all shoppers were cutting back, as the next highest growth rate of 7.7 percent was recorded by upmarket chain Waitrose [JLP.UL].
“Major share growth remains elusive for the top four retailers this period with only Morrisons outperforming the market,” Kantar said, referring to the performance of Britain’s fourth-biggest grocer and its larger rivals Tesco (TSCO.L), Asda (WMT.N) and J Sainsbury (SBRY.L).
Wm Morrison (MRW.L) is due to report first-quarter sales on May 5.
