China starts pilot for direct overseas investment

BEIJING, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Chinese residents will be able for the first time to invest directly in overseas securities under a pilot programme being launched in the northern port city of Tianjin, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange said on Monday.

Until now, individuals have been allowed to invest overseas only through the Qualified Domestic Institutional Investor programme.
