LOS ANGELES, Nov. 1 (Reuters) - Sharp Corp 6753.T reclaimed its ranking as the top-shipper of LCD televisions in North America in the third quarter, while Samsung Electronics Co Ltd 005930.KS became the top shipper of flat panel TVs overall, according to DisplaySearch's TV shipment and forecast results.
Sharp, which ranked second in the second quarter, holds an 11.3 percent share of the North American LCD market, which grew 82 percent to a record high of 6.6 million units for the quarter, the report said. Sharp last held the top ranking for LCD shipments in the first quarter of 2005.
LCD TVs made up 88 percent of flat panel TV sales in the third quarter.
Shipments of plasma televisions for the same quarter fell 17 percent, year over year, to a preliminary total 866,000 units, the report said.
Vizio Inc. fell to No. 2 in shipments of LCD televisions and in the overall flat panel ranking in the third quarter despite posting year-over-year growth of 334 percent in LCD shipments. Samsung dropped to third place in the LCD rankings.
Panasonic, made by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co 6752.T, continued to lead shipments of plasma TVs, but its volume slipped 28 percent from a year ago, when it overshipped televisions to North America as the European market stalled after the World Cup, the report said.
Samsung and LG Electronics Inc 066570.KS were the second- and third-ranked plasma TV shippers in the North American plasma TV, the report showed.
