Regulator clears easyJet's GB Airways acquisition

LONDON, Jan 18 (Reuters) - Britain’s competition watchdog approved easyJet’s (EZJ.L) plans to buy rival low-cost airline GB Airways on Friday, deciding that deal would not hinder rivals.

The Office of Fair Trading said the fact that GB Airways operates routes under a franchise agreement with British Airways BAY.L was a key point.

“This fact was significant in ruling out concerns based on the loss of potential competition on totally new routes in the future, because under the franchise agreement BA has a veto over new routes by GB Airways,” the OFT said in a statement. (Reporting by Marc Jones; Editing by Paul Bolding)
