ECB says ready to act, pushes back on Austrian policymaker comments

FRANKFURT, March 18 (Reuters) - The European Central Bank remains ready to enact further stimulus if necessary, it said on Wednesday, pushing back on comments from Austrian Central Bank chief Robert Holzmann who suggested that monetary policy may be at it limits.

“The ECB stands ready to adjust all of its measures, as appropriate, should this be needed to safeguard liquidity conditions in the banking system and to ensure the smooth transmission of its monetary policy in all jurisdictions,” the ECB said in a statement.

Speaking to Austria’s Der Standard in an interview, Holzmann on Wednesday suggested that the ECB was at its limits and markets were expecting too much from policymakers. (Reporting by Balazs Koranyi; editing by Jason Neely)
