Senate confirms two members of Obama economic team

WASHINGTON, April 14 (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate on Thursday confirmed two new members of U.S. President Barack Obama’s economic team.

Carl Shapiro, an economist in the antitrust division at the Justice Department, and economist Katharine Abraham won unanimous approval to sit on the White House Council of Economic Advisors, which is led by Austan Goolsbee.

Boosting the U.S. economy is Obama’s top goal this year as he and Republicans prepare to face off in the 2012 presidential election campaign.

Shapiro is also a professor at the University of California at Berkeley, a job from which he is currently on leave. (Reporting by JoAnne Allen; Editing by Vicki Allen)
